KTM's story began back in 1934, when Austrian engineer Hans Trunkenpolz opened a metalworking shop in the town of Mattighofen. After WWII, the demand for repair work fell dramatically and Trunkenpolz began thinking about producing his own motorcycles. It wasn't until 1951 that he developed his first prototype – the R100. Serial production of this first motorcycle began in 1953, the same year that businessman Ernst Kronreif obtained a sizable share of the company. The business was then renamed to Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. In the years that followed, KTM secured its first racing title and even made its first appearance at the International Six Days Trial. Although KTM has changed and grown dramatically over the last several decades, the brand has always preserved a passion for adventure with every line of class-leading motorcycles it offers.
